archipelago projects

archipelago is a research studio at the crossroads of humanities and visual cultures,
with a particular focus on printed matters and the status of images in contemporary contexts, and a special interest in the Mediterranean region.

We engage audiences through exhibitions, events, publications, workshops and the curation of digital content.

The studio was founded by Magali Avezou in London, in 2015.It is now based in Marseille and Milan.

Magali Avezou is a curator specialising in photography. Her projects explore the status of the contemporary image and the intersection between photography and other forms such as installation, video, and performance. She writes on contemporary photography for journals such as FOAM and conceives editorial projects.

She is an associate professor at the political science school Sciences Po (Aix-en-Provence, France) and co-directs the undergraduate photography program at the Instituto Europeo di Design (Milan, Italy). She regularly speaks at international universities, organisations, and festivals (Royal College of Arts, Institute for Photography, Reflexions Masterclasses, Mulhouse Biennale). She is a member of C.E.A., the french association of exhibition curators.

In 2025, Magali Avezou co-curated the first issue of Sudario, a visual arts magazine dedicated to the Mediterranean. She is preparing a group exhibition for the 2026 edition of the Mulhouse Photography Biennale, a solo show for the Provence Contemporary Art Festival (Marseille) and a project on the Carré d’art (Nîmes) photography collections within the photography bicentenary anniversary.
